Summary
Concerning the requirements to be granted an Assistant; apologizing for the delay in answering his letter; saying "The regulations as to the amount of personal work to be done by a Professor before he is allowed an Assistant are a matter which concerns the University Court - I will communicate your letter to the Court at its next meeting, if you please to withdraw the request in a contrary sense implied by your superscription of 'Private and Confidential' - the object of which I confess that I do not understand. Pray be good enough to excuse me from discussing the other subjects upon which you enter in your letter."
