Summary:

Discussing mutual friends and their political positions; relating confidential information about a controversy surrounding a mutual friend being asked to write a preface to Uncle Tom's Cabin; saying "I wish to mention a circumstance to you which fills me with some anxiety on account of my old and dear friend Denman who takes it much to heart. If you have not seen it, pray read his most touching dedication of his pamphlet to Mrs. Stowe, author of 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' - and listen to the secret history of that dedication. I know of my own knowledge what I am about to mention. Application was made to a person of eminence who took an interest in Slavery & Slave Trade - asking him to write a preface to a London edition of Uncle Tom - But as 100s of thousands were selling - & there was no copy right, it was plain that the application was a bookseller's trick to give currency to another edition which was not wanted - Therefore it was at once declined - They then applied to Lord Carlisle - and good nature being hurtful when not accompanied with good sense, he at once agreed & wrote a preface - taking the wrong view of the very many disputed matters - Denman was exceedingly vexed and wished that the refusal had not been given - & that so, the mischief of Carlisle's thoughtlessness & ignorance had been avoided. Accordingly, it weighed on his mind so much that he has expressed his sense of C's folly in the dedication to Mrs. Stowe of his own (D's) tract - but he has expressed his feelings in a subdued tone. However, you will see how strongly he does feel - I know it is impossible to exaggerate his sense of C's folly;" discussing literary and political matters related to mutual friends.
