Notes
This letter appears to be a copy made by Arthur Symons. In the October 1916 issue of The North American Review, Symons published an essay, "Some Browning Reminiscences," in which he discusses writing his Introduction to the Study of Browning (published 1886) and Browning's reaction to the book; in that essay he quotes from this letter. He also quotes from a letter he received from George Meredith, to whom he dedicated the Introduction. The line from Meredith's letter which appears in "Some Browning Reminiscences" appears at the bottom of this letter as follows: "George Meredith wrote to me: 'You have done knightly service to a brave leader.'" Symons's signature follows this quotation.
The place of writing is given as "Hand Hotel, Llangollen."
Summary
Writing that he has received the proof of Symons's Introduction from the publishers and thanking him for it; adding "[i]t does it indeed strike me as wonderful that you should have given such patient attention to all these poems, and so thoroughly entered into the spirit in which they were written."
