Concerning the granting of Doctor of Civil Law to John Nichol; saying "...alas! I have nothing to do with the choice of persons for D.C.L. John Nichol is one of my oldest friends & I shd be delighted to see him selected; but I doubt if the Oxford Council would give it to him - However when the time comes there may be a chance of trying."
