Summary
Writing to ask about what her "young prodigi Sellars" might do "for the long period of vacation w'h occurs at the Scotch Universities as of course he has no home to go to except my little Institution at Kenmore & indeed, it would be far better for him to go to a wider field - Now I want your opinion - Shall I get him a job in Edinburgh or Glasgow in some office - with enough remuneration to keep him cheaply for a time - or shall I (with a view of his ultimately adopting the Tuition profession) try & get him out as unpaid teacher to some School abroad where he would give his services for board & Lodging & the advantages of learning the language - I believe with influence such is to be done - Perhaps you know the Boy was for 3 years pupil teacher in the Parish School, & I think him suited to this profession, as he has great command of children & used to have plenty of Practise as Head Boy in my Institution - What I hoped for him was a successful St Andrews course & then perhaps a chance of Oxford or Cambridge & to Masterships in the large public Schools, for which (Alas for the [illegible]) it is almost essential to have an English University Degree. Meantime in a year or two, he might earn a little by going as holiday Tutor to private families - but of course too boyish looking for this yet awhile & I am anxious to try & fix some destination for him for his first vacation, which might be profitable to his future & also not very heavy on my purse;" apologizing for the length of the letter but saying how much she would value his advice and how useful it would be to her "& also to an aspiring member of your University."
