Summary
Referring to something he told him about "Lord Monboddo at the Athenæum - I daresay you know the story of my grandfather's words to David Hume when he heard of his (Humes') mothers death. Stanley in his Lecture on Scottish Church History gives a version rather different from the one in A. Carlyles autobiography and assisted by Burton in his Life of Hume. I never quite knew how Stanley got his account but I think it was from one of the old ladies of Fingask Miss Threipland. I have been reading the account of the Duke of Argyll's funeral. It is like a page of old history...I read your Dove Cottage article with great interest; adding that he will not forget his son and he has already mentioned him to "more than one friend."
