Summary
Concerning a contribution to a memorial window for Bishop Wordsworth and Knight's candidacy for the Athenæum Club; apologizing that he cannot contribute more than £2 to Bishop Wordsworth's "...window much as I honour his memory. The bad times have reduced my means greatly...My illness has been a long & tedious one, congestion of liver, sciatica & gout & I am in hopes that the fine air here will restore me to tolerable health. I am so grieved to hear that Mrs. Knight has been so unwell. It has been a season of trial & illness to many. I had quite hoped that this year's elections would have made you a member of Athenæum & I am more angry than ever to see today that you are not in the list. From what Sir A. Lyall wrote to me I thought you were secure but it is, I am afraid, true that clique influence has far too much to say in these matters. I have lost some friends who would have been of great use by death & I can only say how sorry I am."
