Summary
Being an open letter of recommendation for Professor Knight for his candidacy for a Professor of English Literature at the University of Glasgow; saying "I have known the Professor for many years and have had most intimate knowledge of his writings, and his unrivalled knowledge of literature & philosophy. It seems to me difficult to believe that there can be any one more fitted for such a post than Professor Knight. He is an admirable lecturer. His literary sympathies are wide and penetrating. His knowledge of poetry especially is most remarkable and the modesty and strength of his mind make his judgments most sound and appreciative. He is an indefatigable student and possesses the rare faculty of kindling enthusiasm in young students in a very remarkable manner. I believe that his election to such a Chair would be a lasting benefit to the University - The great biography of William Wordsworth which he has at last completed is an enduring monument of Professor Knights [illegible] as a writer, and his discrimination as a critic."
