Summary
Concerning a possible membership in the Athenæum Club; saying "...you are one of those who ought to be a chosen member of the Athenæum and if all goes well, not many months will pass away before a real effort is made. It is of such vital consequence to keep up the real idea(?) of the Club and this can only be done by a constant influx of the best men. We shall not forget your kind welcome at 'St. Andrews by the Northern Sea.' The Principal of our College was most proper in his regret that they had not more of your lectures - I hear they have created quite an enthusiasm;" discussing a service in the Cathedral the previous day "...at the hour when our friend was laid in the churchyard of the Church he had served for 46 years and there was a great demonstration of [illegible] feeling. The collection of Scotch poetry & history which he had inherited from his brother in law Mr. Lloyd will now probably be sold by action in London. It is not large but it contains some choice old editions of Dunbar, Lyndsay & others. Lord Rosebery may like to hear of it and I shall let him know if the family consult me."
