Notes
The letter is undated, however there is penciled note under Bewley's signature, likely in Cahoon's hand, "Reviews for The Tiger's Eye." The Tiger's Eye published nine quarterly issues from 1947-1949. Richard Eberhart, Lindley Williams Hubbell and Herbert Cahoon had books published by the Banyan Press in 1949 so it is possible this letter was written in 1949.
Summary
Apologizing for delivering his "notices" so late in the month; saying "With the exception of Eberhart's volume (which is his worst to date) and Hubbell's (which , in its way, I rather liked) the books were even worse than I had expected and I always expect the worst when it comes to a section taken out of the publisher's lists for a given period. I had intended to be non-commital [sic], but after surveying them as a whole I decided I should never be able to look any acquaintance in the face again if I left any doubt about my opinion of the sort of stuff represented by Val Baker & Day Lewis. Even so, I toned down what I thought as much as I decently could."
