Summary
Informing the Reverend Larking that he has ordered the Maidstone Gazette to be sent to him regularly, starting on Monday; reporting that the petition (see MA 8969) is going very well: "Every house is visited, & in a few hours yesterday 1300 signatures were obtained. Scarcely anybody refuses. Lord [illegible] & Mr. Wells are to present the Petition"; writing that they received a packet from Lord Winchilsea the previous morning, the contents of which he encloses for Larking's perusal (this item is no longer with the letter); mentioning that they were "very very much vexed" at not being able to print Lord Winchilsea's speech in the paper, but they had already printed off "several hundreds of the inner pages" and it would have been difficult to insert; giving details of the press schedule; adding in a postscript that he will have last Friday and Saturday's paper sent to Larkin; asking him in another note to return "the half of the Standard & Lord Winchilsea's M.S.S. as soon as you have read them as we want them to prepare for our next."
