Summary
Thanking him for his letter and the "kind interest you have taken in what so personally concerned me, & for the conduct you have adopted in consequence of what you considered as an omission on that Part of the Government towards me; discussing a Proclamation that appears to be celebrating Lord Wellington; explaining that he has always conducted himself properly in order that it would reflect well on a British officer who headed the Portuguese Army; saying he expected he might have enemies "...& if I have been disappointed it has been in finding much less of that kind of Enmity that might reasonably from circumstances have been expected & I may gladly add that I do really think that taking every thing into consideration the actual Government here has acted a very fair Part towards me...;" reporting on Enemy positions saying "The Enemy from all our accounts we had expected w'd have opened His Batteries against Almeida this day, but He has not done it. He will not however long delay. You will see we have had another trifling affair of Cavalry, in which the English & Portuguese were jointly engaged & with good credit. 2 Officers & 60 Dragoons have fallen into the Hands of a Troop of each Nation. It appears about 10 escaped.
