The letter is double-dated January 17, 1709 / January 28, 1710.
Louis Berard was hired by the Duke of Leeds to tutor his grandsons William Henry Osborne, Earl of Danby (1690-1711) and Peregrine Hyde Osborne, Viscount Dunblane (1691-1731). He provided weekly accounts of the education of the two boys in this collection of letters.

Summary
Mentioning that they have received a letter from Lady Bridget and are very sorry to hear that the Duke has colic; passing on the rumor that Elisabeth Christine, wife of Charles VI, is pregnant, "so that we may hear in time of two Princes of Asturias, as well as of two kings of Spain"; reporting that "the Grand Signior has been persuaded by the king of Sweden & the french Ambassador to break with the Czar; that which if it should come to pass, King Augustus would be once more in danger to be turned out of Poland"; adding that "two Gazets from Amsterdam" have reported that Louis XIV has died suddenly; writing that they hear that two battalions quartered near Grenoble have "for want of pay, upon the day of Epiphany plundered the market & several merchands' shops there"; mentioning that the Duke of Burgundy apparently wants to command the army in Flanders on the next campaign and that opinions are divided in the French camp about this idea; adding also that they hear that the Duke of Berry is marrying the Duke of Orlean's eldest daughter, Marie Louise Élisabeth d'Orléans; sending word that the Duke's grandsons are well.
