Louis Berard was hired by the Duke of Leeds to tutor his grandsons William Henry Osborne, Earl of Danby (1690-1711) and Peregrine Hyde Osborne, Viscount Dunblane (1691-1731). He provided weekly accounts of the education of the two boys in this collection of letters.

Summary
Explaining that Lord Peregrine would not be writing his letter in French as promised but will do so in the next post; reporting that he has been unable to gather sufficient intelligence on the "state of war, as resolved upon by the States General, for the next campagne. All of what I could learn is that they Intend to augment their forces considerably, & to that end they have agreed to raise again the 200 penny of all y'e Lands & obligations for money throughout the seven provinces, which will enable them to bear the extraordinary charges they will be att;" thanking him for his continuing kindness to his relative Mr. La Reeve.
