Louis Berard was hired by the Duke of Leeds to tutor his grandsons William Henry Osborne, Earl of Danby (1690-1711) and Peregrine Hyde Osborne, Viscount Dunblane (1691-1731). He provided weekly accounts of the education of the two boys in this collection of letters.

Apologizing for "...a Gentleman who marryed a niece of my late wife" who appears to have taken advantage of an introduction made to the Duke of Leeds by Berard; adding that it "...will make me hereafter more wary of recommending any Body specially to y'r Grace, of whose goodness I ought not to abuse."
