Louis Berard was hired by the Duke of Leeds to tutor his grandsons William Henry Osborne, Earl of Danby (1690-1711) and Peregrine Hyde Osborne, Viscount Dunblane (1691-1731). He provided weekly accounts of the education of the two boys in this collection of letters.

Expressing their desire for news of his health and their hopes that his time in Yorkshire was helpful; enclosing a summary of his expenses for the last quarter and reporting that he has "...Setled the Boarding & Lodging of my dear Lords & their retinue, at a cheaper rate then any persons of their quality give in this town; tho, I dare say, they are better Lodged & treated than the others are any where else;" reporting on the lute lessons of Lord Danby and the bass viola and flute lessons for Lord Peregrine and the cost for the music master; concluding that he has no further news to report.
