The letter is double-dated March 23, 1707 / April 3, 1708.
Louis Berard was hired by the Duke of Leeds to tutor his grandsons William Henry Osborne, Earl of Danby (1690-1711) and Peregrine Hyde Osborne, Viscount Dunblane (1691-1731). He provided weekly accounts of the education of the two boys in this collection of letters.

Summary
Enclosing the abstract of his accounts for the last quarter (this abstract is no longer with the letter), and noting that there is a difference of two or three shillings; writing that they have heard that Admiral Byng prevented the French from landing in Scotland, and that the Salisbury man-of-war has been taken, with the general of the French forces and several other officers inside, "which Loss we hope here will discompose the farther designs of the french"; mentioning that everyone comes to them for news, but they are unable to tell them what is happening in England; asking if the Duke could order a "Mr. Lambert or Mr. Wels" to send them "the papers Published by Authority, when any thing Material happens"; reporting that the young Lords are well; adding that they are preparing to go to Rotterdam at the end of the week, to receive the sacrament and to be at the consecration of "the New Episcopal Church, which they have very prettily built in that town."
