Louis Berard was hired by the Duke of Leeds to tutor his grandsons William Henry Osborne, Earl of Danby (1690-1711) and Peregrine Hyde Osborne, Viscount Dunblane (1691-1731). He provided weekly accounts of the education of the two boys in this collection of letters.

Summary
Reporting on his projected and incurred expenses; projecting that the cost for boarding, lodging and the servants will be £38 for the year; explaining the rates for the riding master and the academic masters and the difficulty in finding a Latin master who knows enough English to tutor the boys but that in the meantime he is tutoring the boys in Latin and French "untill they understand enough of the last, as to be capable of learning Latin by the means of it;" explaining the care he is taking with their finances and reporting on the health of the boys.
