It is possible Bennett is referring to Melville's novella "Benito Cerreno" in his citation of "Cerrito Cerrini".

Summary: 

Explaining to him "...that the present enterprise does not embrace a long novel, but only a long-short story, of about the length of, say 'Cerrito Cerrini'. 'The Old Wives Tale' is therefore for the present out of the question. You will shortly receive a copy of the volume containing 'Elsie and the child'. You have only to deal with the first story in the volume."
