Notes
Housed with a facsimile of an undated cover letter on letterhead of the "National Allied Relief Committee / 200 Fifth Avenue, New York City" as an "appeal on behalf of the Highland Regiments, issued by the Association of Highland Societies of Edinburgh, Scotland;" describing the battle losses of the Scottish Divisions and saying "In each of these tremendous battles the Divisions which led the way suffered so severely that practically none of the original members are now serving. When you realize what that must mean - when you think of the men who have come home disabled; of the men who are never coming home again; of the wives who are now widows, or else charged with the care of a crippled husband - there should be no need to urge you to sympathetic effort. Scotland is a little country; its population is far less than that of New York; so we ask you to help her in a manner proportionate to the contribution that she herself has made to the cause of Liberty and Civilization." The letter is signed by Beith as Captain, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders.
