Summary
Declining an invitation; mentioning the brother of a mutual acquaintance ("I have seen your Colonel's Brother; a most square-built, eupeptic, mildly dogmatic, irrefragable, unconquerable looking man, - tho' terribly in want of eyebrows, to my taste! I have little doubt they will do great good in New Zealand."); mentioning that he still has two books borrowed from Maurice ("Your Neal and Baxter stand here these many months, not entirely idle ... Dull both; dull as Lethe, but not to be dispensed with."; asking him if he is familiar with "St Catherine Creed Church [i.e. St Katharine Cree Church] "which Archbishop Laud dedicated in that famous fashion", and noting that he is considering making a pilgrimage to it; asking if Maurice can tell him of "any wise word that has been written in behalf of poor Laud ... I have read [Peter] Heylin, faithfully read it all, but it, alas, is little other than a "Golgotha of Dead Dogs" for me!".
