Summary
Writing to the manager of the Chatto & Windus firm concerning the publication of his novel, The deemster, in volume form; enclosing a portion of copy and commenting on the division of the text into three volumes; enclosing a positive notice for his book from the Westminster [review]; refers to a letter in the Lancet and to the safety of his well from contamination from surrounding sanitary arrangements ("I have cut off our two cesspools, & [added?] earth closets. We are so far from other houses that I don't think our well can be contaminated"); requesting two copies of his book before publication; noting that the critic who previously reviewed his novel, A son of Hagar, in the Athenaeum has praised the enormous improvements made in the book's second edition and expressing his skepticism given the slightness of the changes made ("You know how very slight the changes were. I made them in a day. But we must say nothing & think much."); mentions that it has been suggested that he write "a story of Norway", asks his recipient's opinion on such a book's commercial prospects ("I should like to hear your opinion, &to learn how many Norse stories have been already done, & by whom. There is now a great rage for Norway among holiday makers.").
