Summary
Concerning his eagerness to show them his latest story, installments of which have begun to appear in the newspapers, and the positive responses it has gotten from his readers and fellow authors; describing it as a short novel and "a story of Manx fisher life" and noting, as a possible inducement to the publisher, that the island of Man is reputedly visited by "no fewer than 200 thousand persons" annually; noting that the American publisher De Witt Lent has expressed an interest in the new story; thanking him for a notice for his The shadow of a crime which appeared in The Scotsman, adding, "The notices have hitherto had a gratifying unanimity of eulogy. There is still time enough for discord, & it so hardy in nature that it should come in liberal doses by & by."
