Agreeing to their proposal to reprint his novel, The shadow of a crime, in the Manchester weekly times, although he regards the practice of reprinting a published book in the newspapers as "not a very good one" from the author's perspective, and noting that it is his understanding that payments for reprinting books in serial publications were shared with the author, and adding that "whether or not such like conveyances were contemplated when we made our agreement I trust you will get as much as possible for the right to reprint, for, as you know, the principle touched the author rather closely"; informing them that it is too late to acquire the American serial rights for his new novel.
