Acquired as part of a large collection of letters addressed to William Angus Knight, Chair of Moral Philosophy at the University of St. Andrews and Wordsworth scholar. Items in the collection have been individually accessioned and cataloged.
On stationery with embossed letterhead reading "10, Downing Street,/ Whitehall, S.W." and the black-and-white embossed seal of the First Lord of the Treasury.
Marked "Dictated" and "Private".
On mourning stationery. Balfour's uncle and the former Prime Minister Robert Gascoyne-Cecil, Marquess of Salisbury, had died on August 22, 1903.
With autograph salutation and signature.
