Acquired as part of a large collection of letters addressed to William Angus Knight, Chair of Moral Philosophy at the University of St. Andrews and Wordsworth scholar. Items in the collection have been individually accessioned and cataloged.
On stationery with embossed letterhead reading "10, Downing Street,/ Whitehall, S.W." and the blind embossed seal of the First Lord of the Treasury.

Summary
Accepting an honor from Knight: "As a rule, I shrink from the ordinary dedication. But the one with which you propose to honour me I consider quite out of the ordinary, and shall be most proud to accept this mark of your friendship and esteem"; mentioning that he is sorry to hear that Knight has been suffering but that he hopes his indisposition is temporary; writing that the "news from Osborne to-day is of the very gravest description" (referring to Osborne House, where Queen Victoria would die the following day, January 22, 1901).
