Acquired as part of a large collection of letters addressed to William Angus Knight, Chair of Moral Philosophy at the University of St. Andrews and Wordsworth scholar. Items in the collection have been individually accessioned and cataloged.
Lord Balfour was named Chancellor of St. Andrews in 1900.
The year of writing is not given, however Lord Balfour of Burleigh was the Secretary for Scotland from 1895-1903 and served as Chancellor of St. Andrews from 1900 until his death in 1921.
Written on stationery engraved with the seal of the "Secretary for Scotland / Dover House, Whitehall."

Thanking him for his "kind letter...on assuming office and I hope I may be able to deserve it...;" adding "I am obliged to you for writing so frankly about the qualifications of two of the candidates for the Logic Chair in Aberdeen. The vacancy does not actually take effect till the month of September but you may rest assured that your letter shall be carefully considered & the most sincere attention will be given to what you have been good enough to say when the actual occasion has to be arrived at."
