Summary
Saying that he is "keenly interested in Professor James Seth's Candidature, and have done, and would do, anything in my power to secure him the vacant chair at Aberdeen"; regretting that Seth was not hired by St. Andrews; writing, however, that it is impossible for him to appeal directly to George Trevelyan (Secretary of State for Scotland) in this matter, and he must confine his efforts "to doing what I can in other directions."
