Summary
Writing that he will take into account what Knight has said of "Mr. Evans" but that he has heard nothing of a "probable vacancy" at present; discussing the volume on John Stuart Mill for Knight's series and his reservations about it: "I should be glad, as I always told you, to make some attempt on it, but in or out of Office the claims on my time are likely to be so heavy that I feel I ought not to give any pledge to the Publisher or to you on the subject... I should be unwilling that either you or he should think that I had raised expectations which I was unable to fulfil."
