Summary
Describing his vision for a projected volume on John Stuart Mill to be published in Knight's series "Philosophical Classics for English Readers": "I should be glad to deal with him as a thinker -- political and philosophical -- and to trace his connection with the previous thinkers of the same School"; explaining, however, that he does not have the time to do original research into Mill's life, and that he fears the volume may not be as favorable to Mill's memory as his admirers might like: "I think this is a real obstacle to my undertaking a volume of a Series of which the theory has been that each volume should be undertaken by some one in more or less close sympathy and agreement with its subject. If, with all these qualifications and limitations, you still desire to let my name appear as the prospective editor of Mill, I shall be happy to meet your wishes."
