Summary
Expressing interest in writing a volume on John Stuart Mill for Knight's series "Philosophical Classics for English Readers": "I think that, in spite of a strong sense of his shortcomings as a philosopher I should be in sufficient sympathy with him to do him justice"; rejecting the idea of writing on other philosophers suggested by Knight, among them Malebranche, Comte, and Schelling: "Malebranche is too much outside the main current of speculation. Comte is too little of a philosopher. Schelling, even if I understood him which I admit I do not, by general consent leads to nothing."
