Acquired as part of a large collection of letters addressed to William Angus Knight, Chair of Moral Philosophy at the University of St. Andrews and Wordsworth scholar. Items in the collection have been individually accessioned and cataloged.
At the start of the letter, the words "Cobham, Surrey" have been crossed out and replaced with "Eastbourne Lodge, Worcester".
Richard Penrose Arnold was the third son of Matthew Arnold.

Summary
Responding to Knight's offer to edit a small selection of Matthew Arnold's poetry and telling him that in fact Matthew Arnold himself had made a selection of his poems for the Golden Treasury series, published by Macmillan; offering to send Knight a copy of this volume; writing that Macmillan would have to be consulted regardless; commenting about such books: "I always think the question as to whether a book of selections is a good or bad thing is a very open one"; sending news of the state of his wife Ella's health.
