Summary
Thanking Knight for his "most kind and touching letter of sympathy" on the death of his father, Matthew Arnold; describing how he received the news of it: "I with my wife & my sister were on board the 'Aurania' and were just getting out of the cab at the hotel in Liverpool when my uncle met us with the sad and dreadful news"; writing of his own feelings: "My dear father, I can scarcely yet realize what I have lost and that I shall never hear his voice or have his advice & help again: to his children he was not only the kindest & most indulgent of fathers, but the dearest & most intimate of friends as well"; conveying his mother's thanks for Knight's letter.
