The "Mr. and Mrs. Bard" referred to here were probably the New York philanthropists John and Margaret Bard, who had left New York to resettle in Europe after the death of their son in 1868.

Writing to introduce to him her friends Mr. and Mrs. Bard of New York, and asking that he show them some consideration during a planned stay in Edinburgh, as "Mr. Bard feels much interest in all the church and educations questions ... for in his own country he has endowed a college and built some churches".
