Acquired as part of a large collection of letters addressed to William Angus Knight, Chair of Moral Philosophy at the University of St. Andrews and Wordsworth scholar. Items in the collection have been individually accessioned and cataloged.
The letter sent by Mrs. Shairp to which she refers is one written from Matthew Arnold to Principal Shairp which she hoped to include in Volume I of the Letters of Matthew Arnold, 1848-1888 being compiled by George W.E. Russell. Volume I was published by Macmillan & Co. in 1895.
Written on stationery engraved "Pains Hill Cottage / Cobham, Surrey."
