Remembering Principal Shairp; saying "...that of all the men I have ever known with extraordinary personal charm, he stands among the very first. It was impossible to have any converse with him without loving him. It was indeed a 'loyal nature and a noble mind' - most refined - most sympathetic - most catholic, in the best sense of that much abused word. I felt that a light was gone when I heard of his death."
