Agreeing to contribute reminiscences of his own to a memoir of "Principal Shairp" that Professor Knight is writing; saying that "I am sure the writing of this memoir will be to you a most congenial though melancholy task, & no one could carry it out in a more appreciative spirit than yourself"; thanking Professor Knight for "telling me of the conversation mentioned in your letter--one so much values the record of any kindly word or thought of his"; and apologizing for the "appearance of tardiness" in his response.
