Notes
Stephens served as the art editor of the Athenaeum and Phillips's letter appears to have been written in response to a review appearing in the Fine arts column of that periodical (no. 2986, Jan. 17, 1885, p. 91), in which Stephens discusses the life of Ignatius Sancho and identifies the editor of his posthumously published correspondence as "Mr. Jekyll".
Provenance
Bequest of Gordon N. Ray, 1987.
Summary
Identifying the editor of the Letters of the Late Ignatius Sancho (1802) as Mrs. Phillips, and not Mr. Jekyll, and noting that the vignette illustrating the volume "was intended as a compliment to her for her work".
