Notes
James has simply dated the letter "Sunday a.m." but it is likely that it was June 1907. James relates a drive in a motorcar on a "beautiful June Sunday" to Ostia in his "Italian Hours". This letter relates a drive upon which he is to embark on this Sunday in a motorcar to Ostia. James stayed at the Hotel de Russie during his stay in Rome in May and June of 1907.
Part of a collection of letters from Henry James to Dr. William W. Baldwin between 1887 and 1900 (MA 8732.1-75). This collection is part of a much larger collection of letters to Dr. Baldwin from authors, English royalty and other luminaries of the period, including Samuel Clemens, William Dean Howells, Sarah Orne Jewett, Henry Cabot Lodge, Booth Tarkington, Edith Wharton and Constance Fenimore Woolson. See MA 3564 for more information on the complete Baldwin collection.

Summary
Making a plan for dinner later that evening; proposing that as "...the 'Girandola' taking place close to us here tonight, & all the energies of Rome being probably concentrated on it - to the neglect & perhaps non-preparation of dinners on the Aventina - you should amiably, very amiably, dine with me, here at 8, after which we may perhaps not fail of a view of said Girandola from the excellent garden of the hotel. I have had a very urgent & charming invitation to go by motor in the afternoon to Ostia & Castel Porziano - which I've never seen (returning by 6:30 or 7) & I have been tempted to accept it without communicating with you in respect to that possible Janicular drive (for which a general big festa day strikes me as unpropitious). I have done so therefore - availed myself of this motor chance - as the only occasion to go to Ostia I shall probably ever have - & in the admirable automobile way that makes the temptation great, our drive we can still, I hope, take;" adding that in the hope that he "...will dine with me quietly here at 8, I shall rest in this fond belief if I hear nothing from you to the contrary."
