Summary
Commenting on the recently published translations of the works Garcilaso by "our friend" Jeremiah Holmes Wiffen; the works of such "natural poets" as Burns and John Clare; Barton's dispute with the publisher G. and W.B. Whittaker over Edward Nares's book Heraldic anomalies (London : G. and W.B. Whittaker, 1823); lamenting, in forceful terms, the current situation in Spain ("for I know what a mass of prejudice & what a mass of power exists there to be exerted against the cause of freedom & improvement. The dependents on the Inquisition - on old abuses ... the disorganized state of the finances - the busy & [...] treachery of the King - the small number of regular forces - these are among the motives for apprehension ... I pray, pouring out my spirit with an impatient & almost undevout fervor - I pray calling down fire on the heads _____ & then I turn back on my melancholy self - think of what is allowed & what is denied to a follower of Jesus ... Alas! If these tyrants succeed in their ruthless, reckless, outrageous, flagitious violence - what is left us but - to die.").
