Summary
Thanking him for the book he received from him for Christmas but explaining that he already has a copy of it; commenting on the vast number of books in his personal library and his chief concern "not to add to them, but to find some home for them, where they will be kept together, before I have to leave them"; reflecting on the recent deaths of friends and contemporaries and the, to his mind, inappropriate manner in which their estates are frequently disposed of; mentioning that he is kept from going to the "Scottish exhibition" by his ailing lung and that he and his wife fear to travel to Italy owing to their mistrust of Mussolini.
