Harry F. Hughes-Hallett was the commander of the H.M.S. Superb during the vessel's participation in the bombardment of Alexandria on July 11-July 13, 1882 and the ensuing struggle on the part of the British to take control of the city.
Part of a collection of 22 letters to Lord Charles and Lady Beresford from various friends and associates; the letters are described individually (MA 13315.1-22).

Writes with news of her husband, Lord Beresford, "I hear he has with his usual aptitude fallen into the habits of the country - sits all day on a divan, in a fez, smoking cigarettes & drinking coffee, & never hurries himself.", and other naval officers, including Robert Hornby, Sir Beauchamp Seymour, General Fielding, Lieutenenat Charles Graves-Sawle of the Superb, and others; with observations on the suffering of the English horse in the Egyptian sun ("the household Brigade expect to be entirely mounted on donkeys soon").
