Thanking him for an article on Bennett's novel The old wives' tale and commenting, in response to the book's critical reception, on the comparative quality and significance of that work in relation to his other writings ("As a literary writer of long experience I am prepared to assert that of the 30 books I have published at least four are inferior to The old wives' tale in nothing except length. They are perhaps all bad, but they are not worse").
