Summary
Concerning summer travel plans and an expected visit from the Higginsons; apologizing for the delay in replying to his letter but saying he had been "on an obligatory pilgrimage to the West of England;" expressing his delight to learn that they are in Europe and will come to see him; telling them that he "shall be here - by which I mean on this very spot - from this time on & for the rest of the summer & autumn, & shall heartily rejoice to welcome you here;" responding to a request for suggestions of "quiet watering-places" at the seaside in England; saying "The Seaside watering-place is here, nowadays, mostly, an inferior - a third rate resort (save the case of the few winter places, like Brighton, Torquay, &c, which are impossible in summer.) Hastings & St. Leonard's, near me here (12 miles away) are for instance, mere shadeless deserts of bricks & mortar without a redeeming feature & given over to mobs of intoxicated cheap trippers;" suggesting they try Folkestone for its "well appointed summer character" and proximity to "H.J. It is civilized, salubrious & convenient & would, with its big safe beaches & grounds &c, be excellent for your children;" explaining the difference between "apartments" in England versus America; adding that he hopes they will spend some time with him; offering to meet them in Folkestone "to give you, after you have got there, any quieting hand I can;" adding, in a postscript, that he hopes this vacation has been a restorative one for him.
