Summary
Concerning the upcoming publication of his A New Year's Eve and other poems (London : Hatchard and Son, 1828) and his intention to present a copy of his new work to the Athenaeum along with a few lines by himself; his respect for their journal and the importance he attaches to the critical opinions expressed therein; comments at length on the general perception of himself as a Quaker and therefore preeminently religious poet ("I am the more desirous of being allowed such "a word or two," because, without design, or calculation afore-thought, I have been often spoken of as a Religious, if not a Sectarian Poet ... I never intentional assumed the character of a Religious Poet, because I regard that epithet as it has been too often conferred & used, with distrust, but I should be sorry indeed to put forth any volume of poetry which had no religion in it: because, my idea of Religion being comprehended in Love to God and Man, any book must be worthless, if meant to interest the heart in which these were not discernible ..."); requesting that they send him the number of the Athenaeum featuring their review of his book, "as my Athenaeums only reach me in monthly parts", and he is anxious about their critical report.
