The Morgan Library holds 32 letters from Dickens to Stone, from February 14, 1864 to September 2, 1865, all related to Stone's illustrations for Our Mutual Friend, the first installment of which was published in May 1864. This collection has been cataloged as MA 91.1-32.
Marcus Stone was a painter and illustrator whose work, in addition to the illustrations for Our Mutual Friend, included the frontispieces for editions of Little Dorrit and A Tale of Two Cities and eight illustrations for The Illustrated Library edition of Great Expectations.
