Notes
Possibly a restrike of a linocut by Matisse identified by Duthait as one of two designs created by the artist for Iliazd's Poesies de mots inconnus (Paris : Le Degré 41, 1949). Cf. Marguerite Duthait-Matisse & Claude Duthait. Henri Matisse : catalogue raisonné de l'œuvre gravé. Paris : Claude Duthuit, 1983, no. 749 ("A propos de 'Poesie de mots inconnus'"); accompanying documentation suggestions that the restrike may have been created by the printer Fequet-Baudier in 1979 from the original block in their possession as a preliminary step in the creation of a greeting card reproducing the design created by the firm ca. 1980.
