Volume 32 (MA 1289) of a 33-volume collection of the correspondence of Sir James Pulteney, his family and distinguished contemporaries "the larger portion having reference to the Duke of York's Expedition to the low Countries and to the Threatened Invasion of England by Napoleon" (MA 487, MA 297 and MA 1260-1290). The arrangement of the collection is alphabetical by the author. A collection of 41 documents and copies of documents, some signed, related to the equipment, clothing, casualties, strength, recruitment and payment of regular troops and volunteer militia. The documents cover military matters related to troops quartered on Gibraltar and in Lisbon and to troops quartered in barracks in England. The volume also includes 6 items (MA 1289.12-17) detailing ship signaling which include one manuscript copy of "Signals to be made in the Night by the Cruizers employ'd to watch the motions of the Enemy to the Signal Posts on the Coast", with a printed copy (MA 1289.12) and 5 printed charts and instructions including one titled "Private Signals by which His Majesty's Ships are to be made known to the different Signal Posts established along the Coast" (MA 1289.17).
