Summary
Concerning the Battle Of Fleurus; referring to the battle as an "unfortunate Event wh has taken place on the Sambre. If I am not mistaken I mentioned in my last letter that I feared delay & indecision would occasion the failure of so important an Attack. Had the Attack taken place the day before, Charleroi might perhaps have been saved. - The P. of Coburg now expects that the Duke should with the small Corps He has here (6000 Inf'y Men) defend the Passage of the Scheldt from Oudenarde to Tournay. The Enemy Yesterday made an unsuccessful Attack upon the former place, as well as upon Orchies & Tournay; These as well as that upon Oudenarde, failed more from the small Number they brought against these Places than from the Resistance they met with. Lord Moira is arrived at Ostend but no Instruction as yet been formed with His Corps. Our Retreat must be upon Grammont. The F. are said to be in immense force on our front & We may expect an Attack tomorrow."
