Summary
Acknowledging receipt of his recent letters and commenting on his assessment of the situation; saying "The freedom with which you state your sentiments though such as I must approve of, are rather novel from that quarter, and the account you give of the [illegible] Generals differ I fancy from the other statements from that quarter also. I hope you may be wrong in your supposition of their soon being opposed to us openly instead of appearing our pretended friends, yet doing no one act worthy that appellation;"discussing his attempts to find some things suitable for him to give as presents; acknowledging receipt of his letter of the 15th which "contained news so important that I shewed it to the Gov'r & shall forward a Copy of it to Ge'nl Wellesley - One would think our successes would have established Holkars neutrality at least, if not his solicitude to be come a friend...;" referring to the "taking of Agra - after which the enemy left their old leaders and several Corps came over to Gen'l Lake & are now with him. "
